The 5 Major Purposes Of Marriage

Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.(KJV)

In the beginning, God saw that it was not good for man to be alone, so he created a partner for him, and conducted the very first marriage.

But today, marriage has become an avenue that people use to achieve different purposes, aside from the original purpose(s) for which it had been created for, and that is why many marriages do not last. Some people marry for wealth, fame, due to pressure, to belong, to have their dream wedding, etc.

“When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable”

Myles Munroe quotes

Let's look at the main purposes for marriage:

1. COMPANIONSHIP

Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.(KJV)

The journey of life is a long and challenge-filled one. It is one where you are faced with uncertainties every single day. Life is filled with surprises and difficulties, which you cannot handle on your own. This is why we all need that one person who will stick with us, through thick and thin; whom we can share our thoughts, hopes and dreams with, who will encourage us when we're discouraged, whom we can laugh and cry with, who will make us feel " you're not alone, I got your back" and infact, whom we can share our lives with. In addition, We really cannot go through a week without interacting with at least one person because we are social beings. Many of us are scared of being alone and that's why we have friends. Loneliness brings sadness, depression, hopelessness, and other negative emotions and God doesn't want that for us, so He gives us that one true companion.

2. PROCREATION

Procreation is the process of producing offspring(s). To prevent extinction of the Human race, God gave us the ability to produce other humans and populate the earth. This cannot be achieved by only one person, whether man or woman but by the union of a man and a woman.

Genesis 9:7 And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein. (KJV)

3. SUPPORT

Many times, we have tried to do something on our own but ended up failing. Sometimes, we may also have had success but not as great as it'd be if it were two.

“If you want to walk fastwalk alone. But if you want to walk far, walk together.” Ratan Tata quotes

Everyday of our lives we need help and support in one thing or the other; it could be an advice, financial support, prayers, time, encouragement, etc.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. 11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.(NLT)

Whether it is problem solving or carrying out a project, when two people are involved, different ideas that can bring solution, come from both parties.

4. PLEASURE

God has put into every one of us, the desire for intimacy, but this has been abused by many people today in that engage in sexual affairs outside of marriage. God doesn't like that.

Hebrews 13:4 Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.(NLT)

Marriage was created for this purpose, so we would not look for satisfaction anywhere and everywhere we find ourselves. With the desire for intimacy, is self control, that God has also given us.

5. TO ILLUSTRATE HIS LOVE FOR US

Ephesians 5:31 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. 32 This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. 33 So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.(NLT)

God created marriage to portray the kind of love he has for us (though we know he even loves us more than that), so that we can know how to respond and reciprocate his love for us in the most appropriate way, by giving our lives to Him. Just as a new couple is crazy about each other and cannot do without each other, so is God crazy about us. A loving husband or wife is willing to make great sacrifices and does everything possible for their partner's happiness; so is God willing to give us all we need to be, and stay happy, and has even done it, by sending His blessed Jesus Christ to die for us. PRAISE GOD!!😃

Marriage is the union of a man and a woman not more than one man or more than one woman. We can see this in God's creation of Adam, and his wife, Eve.

Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. Genesis 2:22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. Genesis 2:23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.(KJV)

If these 5 reasons for marriage are strongly adhered to, then a Godly, happy and long lasting marriage is sure.
